Beautiful Berwick upon Tweed
The pretty town of BERWICK UPON TWEED is the most Northerly town in England and is conveniently situated on the main East Coast railway line, just three miles south of the Scottish Border. It has a unique history, having changed hands between England and Scotland no less than 13 times, remaining firmly on English soil since 1482, and is the only English town to have a football club, Berwick Rangers, playing in the Scottish Division.
In order to keep its Townsfolk safe from invasion, the magnificent Elizabethan Walls were built in 1558, remaining resplendently intact to this day and are in fact widely considered to be the best-preserved example of town defences in Europe, providing a most enjoyable walk circumnavigating the Town, with breathtaking views over the mouth of the River Tweed and out to the North Sea.
